Why sewer lines fail in San Antonio
Roots are the first cause and the most persistent. They do not break into a sound pipe — they find a joint that is already weeping and grow toward the water. Clear them and flow returns; the joint they came through is still there, which is why the same line blocks again in a year or two.
Soil is the second, and it is particular to this market. The clay under most of Bexar County expands when wet and contracts when dry, working a buried pipe back and forth season after season for decades. Bellies are the result — a sagging low point that holds standing water, and everything that settles out of it.
Age is the third. Older San Antonio neighbourhoods run cast iron inside the house and clay out to the city main. Cast iron corrodes and roughens; clay joints separate. Neither fails suddenly, which is the good news — a camera finds both years before a backup does.

Trenchless is not automatically the better option and it is not automatically the cheaper one. It is the one that avoids tearing up what is above the pipe. On a shallow run under grass, digging can cost less all-in. On a line under a concrete driveway, restoration alone can run $300 to $10,000, which is usually what settles the argument.
