Time for a New System? Let’s Do This Right.
Replacing your AC is one of the bigger investments you’ll make in your home. The right system, properly sized and installed, keeps your San Antonio home comfortable for 15–20 years. The wrong one—or a lazy installation—costs you in comfort and electricity for just as long.
At Apollo Air, we don’t just sell you the most expensive unit on the truck. We size the system for your specific home, explain your options in plain English, and install it to manufacturer specs—and homeowners in the northeast suburbs can review the details on our dedicated page for AC installation and replacement in Schertz, TX. Call us for an in-home consultation.
Apollo Air Heating & Cooling HVAC Services:
How We Size Your System (And Why It Matters)
Getting the size right is the single most important part of an AC installation. An oversized system cools fast but shuts off before pulling the humidity out—so your house feels clammy. An undersized system runs all day and never reaches temperature. Both waste energy.
We do a Manual J load calculation for every install. It accounts for your square footage, ceiling height, window count and orientation, insulation levels, attic conditions, and San Antonio’s specific climate data. That tells us exactly how many BTUs your home needs, and we match that to the right equipment.
We don’t eyeball it based on square footage alone. That shortcut is responsible for most of the poorly sized systems in San Antonio.
What Happens on Installation Day
A typical replacement takes 4–8 hours. Here’s how it goes:
- Prep (30 min). Crew arrives, lays drop cloths, protects your floors and walls.
- Old system removal (1–2 hours). We disconnect and pull out the old equipment. Refrigerant is recovered per EPA rules.
- Installation (2–4 hours). New equipment goes in—outdoor unit, indoor coil, refrigerant lines, condensate drain, electrical connections. Ductwork mods take longer.
- Testing (30–60 min). We vacuum the lines, leak-check, charge the system, and run it through a full cycle. We measure temperature drop and check airflow at every vent.
- Walkthrough (15 min). We show you how to use the thermostat, explain the warranty, and make sure you’re good.
When to Replace Your AC
- It’s 12–15+ years old. Average AC lifespan in San Antonio is 12–18 years depending on maintenance. Older systems use 30–50% more electricity than modern equipment.
- Repairs are adding up. If you’ve spent over $1,000 on repairs in the past couple years, that money is better put toward a new system with a full warranty.
- It uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 (Freon) is phased out. Recharges get more expensive every year. Time to upgrade.
- Your electric bill keeps climbing. Older 10 SEER systems use significantly more electricity than modern 16+ SEER2 units. In San Antonio where cooling is your biggest energy expense, the savings are real.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a new thermostat?
If your current one is compatible, keep it. But if you’re upgrading to a two-stage or variable-speed system, you’ll need a communicating or smart thermostat to get the full benefit. We’ll advise you during the estimate.
Will you haul away the old system?
Yes. Removal and disposal is included.
What about the warranty?
Most brands offer 5–10 years on parts when the system is registered. We register it for you, provide all the documentation, and our installation comes with a workmanship guarantee.
What if I don’t have ductwork?
Ductless mini splits are an excellent option for homes without ducts. We can also install new ductwork if you prefer central AC.
